Google has a three step solution for reducing the large amount of energy they use, and part of it is indeed producing their own. their Mountain View, CA offices are partially powered by solar panels that generate 1.6 megawatts of power, which powers 30% of the buildings when they are in full operation. They are looking to install more, and have also created RE<C, an initiative to help make renewable energy cheaper than coal.
They also reduce energy use by making their operations more efficient, from using natural lighting and motion sensor lighting in their offices to using the latest technology that doesn’t waste electricity. Finally, to offset the carbon use that they cannot yet eliminate, they purchase offsets by donating to programs that they feel are working toward sequestering carbon in the atmosphere.
