Does fire help forests grow faster?

Forest fires can often rejuvenate forests by allowing understory development and the new growth of certain plants.  The seeds in pine cones, for example, will not germinate unless exposed to pine cones.  The damage caused by forest fires to animals and their habitats, however, usually outweighs the beneficial aspects of such fires.

On a slightly related note, burning pine-cones can produce a radiant spectrum of colors in the fireplace.
