Does the EPA have any standards to how coal ash can be stored?

The EPA does not currently have any guidelines as to how coal ash should be stored. However guidelines will be available soon, and will be made with the input of over 200,000 comments and 8 public hearings. The EPA is currently deciding whether or not to classify coal ash as a hazardous waste product. If so, coal ash storage ponds will be shut down by 2016 and coal ash’s disposal will be managed by federal and state governments. If not, the disposal of coal ash will be kept in check by “citizen” lawsuits.
