Yes, the interaction between the atmosphere and the ocean currents of the Pacific which cause the El Niño phenomenon to occur cause warm temperatures in the equatorial Pacific waters. Other effects include intense storms and flooding. Nutrient-poor waters characterize the ocean during El Niño; therefore, fishing and other marine activities may suffer.
