If one is using straight vegetable oil reduction in fuel efficiency as well as reduced power have been reported.
Most biofuel is known as biodiesel. Biodiesel, compared to oil-based diesel, has 4.6% less energy. The same goes for ethanol-based fuels, or widely known as E85. E85 has 1/3rd less energy content comapred to tradtional gasoline. That means less MPG, and you will end up paying more because E85 is more expensive to produce as well as suffering from decreased mileage.
So yes, biofuels, at this moment, is less efficient than tradtional gas/diesel powered engines since oil-based fuels contain more energy than biofuels.
