The earth contains some radioactive minerals/gases that are stored within itself. There is a real hazard of radon gas seeping up through basement floors and into homes which can cause lung cancer with prolonged exposure. The radiation the earth gives off is known as background radiation, and is not very harmful to humans as we are exposed to it daily.
Are there any places where the radiation could be dangerous?
anywhere there is an elevated level of radiation, such as former nuclear testing grounds, chernobyl where there was a radioactive leak many years ago. The only way to reliably tell if the ground you are standing on has dangerous levels of radiation is to use a geiger counter. The general lethal dose for radiation is 500 R/hr.
