If you think about it, downshifting in a manual transmission car is done so to increase acceleration. Fast acceleration requires a low gear-ratio with a lower RPM ceiling. The higher the RPM, the harder the engine is working. Downshifting in effect does not save fuel or energy, instead it decreases your fuel efficiency because the engine works harder when downshifting and consumes more fuel. I know because I drive manual as well.
