Diesel is also made from crude oil, which is indeed what comes out of all of the oil rigs. The way that it is different from gasoline is in the processing and refining process. The diesel is shipped through piplines which actually are also used to ship regular gasoline, so there is some comingling that takes place which is why it has to be tested for quality before being shipped to distributors.
