Yes, development leads to species going extinct because of increased stress. When a city or suburb develops residential, commercial, or industrial zones in forests, a species habitat is lost. Since many species live only in specified habitats. Destruction of only a few habitats can lead to increased stress by a loss of food sources for instance. This increased stress can lead many species to extinction if they are not able to compete in other habitats for resources.
