It depends on your personal opinion of what would be worth it. Online, I’ve found a prototype that was tested last fall that is driven mainly by gravity and some electricity. The engineers working on it want to make it as efficient as a light bulb. It would be able to produce 15 liters of water in an hour, using the combined effort of 1600 smaller units.
Personally, I think it would be easier using rainwater as freshwater than to depend on desalination techniques. However, if the human population keeps going up, there will eventually be a point where there is not enough water for everyone, no matter what techniques you use to desalinate water.
