Does the density of New York help that city be more eco friendly?

A densely-populated city has opportunities at eco-friendly living that other areas can’t ever have – mainly, the use of public transit, more densely packed buildings and smaller homes.  In 2008, NYC’s PER CAPITA emissions were only a third of those found in the rest of the country.  Also, as home to some of the more ingenuitive minds in our country, New York City has some of the leading innovations like green roofs already in place, where less densely populated areas might have a harder time finding them viable.
