Does the dairy industry have a larger carbon footprint than the beef industry?

Since the formula to deduce carbon footprints is so complicated, and not very precise, it is difficult to tell which industry has a higher carbon footprint. We do know that combined, the carbon footprints of both industries, perhaps combined into simply the “cow industry,” produces an insanely high value. We know this because Methane is an extremely dangerous greenhouse gas, more dangerous than Carbon Dioxide. The U.S. dairy industry has not yet perfected the formula for a carbon footprint of a cow for these comparisons to be made.
