It can, “using cruise control on the highway helps you maintain a constant speed and, in most cases, will save gas.”
Using cruise control while driving on the freeway can save gas. A test was performed where 4 different cars where used on a 55 mile loop. For all the different vehicles one 55 mile loop was done with cruise control set at 70 mph and one 55 mile loop was done where the driver drove between 65 and 75 mph. The test concluded an average saving up to 14 percent, with a 7 percent average savings while using cruise control. However if you are driving on mountain roads cruise control can actually use more gas.
