Does cottonwood split easier when green or dry?

I am splitting some firewood with a maul and wedge and I would like to know how long I should wait before splitting it. It is green now.

Experts say that the wood will split better when dry although it takes longer than most other woods to dry out (difficult to find an exact number, but around 4-5 months to completely dry).  Once it is dry, it will split easier and burn faster, producing a lot of heat quickly.
