Does coal smoke cause acid rain?

In a way. Acid rain is caused mostly by the contaminates or burning coal, mostly sulfur dioxide but also nitrogen dioxide as well. Coal with high sulfur content is sometimes called “sour” coal, while coal with less sulfur is called “sweet” coal and better for air quality when burned.
