Does China use nuclear power?

Yes, they do.  Mainland China currently has 11 power plants running commercially and has about 20 more underconstruction.  Plans are also underway to build more.  Right now China relies heavily on fossil fuels, but due to their large carbon footprint, officials have demanded that nuclear plants be built to help reduce emissions and become a greener country on the whole.

It is not obvious that China is building nuclear power plants because officials demanded reduction in carbon emissions; in fact China’s coal consumption is surging and emissions continue to increase. It is more likely that China realizes the limitations of all energy sources, and wishes to be well positioned in terms of having multiple resource bases for its needs. They are doing that in terms of oil, coal, iron, and many other mineral resources.
