When it comes to air pollution, yes they do. China’s lower environmental standards for coal and other emission heavy industries have caused the creation of toxic environments in their cities, and had them overtake the US in terms of total greenhouse gas emissions in 2008. China’s coal-fire power plants that are at the heart of their industrial boom are largely to blame for this increase in air pollutants. Sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides contribute to respiratory diseases as well as acid rain in much of the country.
Yes, pollution is produced in China more than any other country in the world. In 2007, the European Union stated that China’s air pollution only left room for 1% of its population to breathe properly. The water pollution only leaves enough safe drinking water for half a billion people. 90% of groundwater and 75% of rivers and lakes are polluted, and the water is not even clean enough to water plants.
China’s pollution problem is very serious, as you can see. Much more worse than the United States, and the rest of the world for that matter.
