China is one of the largest exporters of food to the US. However, figures for organic food products from China have been dropping the past few years because of conflicts in organic standards and health scandals from products originating in China. Two years ago Whole Foods had 30 products labeled organic from China, but due to complains over their organic standards and perhaps untrustworthy labels products of this type have dwindled down to merely two in Whole Foods. As a result of the controversy, it is unclear if many products labeled “organic” in China would be considered organic by US standards. This issue aside, however, China reports 60% of agricultural area is for organic farming and the majority of these products stay in China rather than being exported.
