Does changing all of your lights to CFL’s make a bigger difference than changing your washer and dryer to more energy efficient ones?

This depends on a number of different variables: how much more efficient your new washer and dryer will be, how many lights you have, and how efficient the CFLs you want to use are. In general, dryers have similar efficiencies across the board so that won’t make a difference. Washers do differ, and it’s reasonable to assume a new washer saves 100 kwh/year. Replacing an incandescent with a CFL might save 30 kwh/year. So if you’re replacing more than a few light bulbs, chances are good that that will save more energy than replacing your washer.
