Generally, it doesn’t. The earthquake loses more inertia the further away from the epicenter… but this doesn’t mean the Central US does not experience earthquakes. The New Madrid fault sits over Missouri and caused a deadly, HUGE earthquake in the early 1800’s that actually reversed the flow of the Mississippi River for a short period of time.
