No. Cardboard, glass, and metal are all pretty uniform, so they don’t need numbers. Glass is sorted by color, but the basic silicone that makes up glass is a naturally occurring compound. Plastic, on the other hand, is a synthetic material created by different processes. Therefore, it must be processed differently when recycled. The numbers were arbitrarily assigned to some of the most common types of plastic.
