California is actually #3 for wind power. Texas takes first place, followed by Iowa. Iowa’s advantage is that it’s a relatively rural state, and more flat too.
Most new wind power is being built in the Great Plains region of the United States, which has a favorable combination of characteristics: ample wind resources, flat topography, and broad acceptance from local farmers and ranchers. The state that has produced the most wind power in 2008 was North Dakota followed by Texas and Kansas. The following link has a list of the top wind producers by state.
