Currently, the largest solar farm in the United States is the DeSoto Next Generation Solar Energy Center in Arcadia, Florida. It produces about 42,000 megawatt-hours of electricity a year and is situated on 180 acres with 90,000 solar panels. President Obama attended the opening ceremonies of the plant in October. Prior to its commission, the Nellis Solar Power Plant, with 70,000 panels on 140 acres generating 25 million kilowatt-hours, on a military base outside of Las Vegas was the largest in the country. However, several other larger solar farms are now under construction or in planning stages. As of last February, the Rancho Cielo Solar Farm in Belen, New Mexico was the largest proposed solar farm, on 700 acres providing 600 megawatt-hours of electicity.
