Does Boulder usually experience wildfire danger or is this fire different from usual?

Also, why is this particular fire so destructive?

Any metropolitan area that borders wooded areas and is experiencing a drought is in a higher danger of wildfire than usual. Boulder is fairly close to some heavy vegetation, and much of that vegetation is dry during the summer months. The problems in Boulder were a combination of factors, including abnormally dry conditions and high winds. It is unusual in that it devastated many homes. In the past, most of the fires in the area did not do as much property damage as these recent fires in Boulder.
