does bone break down in landfills?

Bones last longer than most organic tissues as evinced by the fact that archeologists have unearthed skeletons which are thousands of years old. However, the proteins and minerals in bone will eventually break down over time. The rate of decay depends on what type of soil the bones are embedded in. Bones embedded in wet acidic soil may decay in as few as 25 years. Bones in dryer more alkaline soils may be preserved for much longer.
