    Apparently seeing green landscape and blue sky is so strongly built into the human animal that even looking at a picture of them is likely to be calming. (I don’t know what your dentist’s office looks like, but mine has nature scenes where you can’t miss them.)

    There’s nothing uber-surprising here, in evolutionary terms. Deserts generally = death. Big expanses of white snow = death. Big expanses of water at eye level = you might be drowning.

    So “being in nature” isn’t exactly what’s calming, it’s being in nature that’s unthreatening.
