Does the bark beetle only affect trees with thick bark?

There are a variety of bark beetles that attack different species of trees. The main species include the mountain pine beetle, the douglas fir beetle, the spruce beetle, and the western balsam bark beetle. However, all bark beetles tend to assault trees that have been weakened by drought or other circumstances. The weakened trees are unable to withstand the bark beetle attacks.
