Does a bad economy usually mean that we use less gasoline?

It should.  At the beginning of the recession, gas prices shot up to more than $4.00/ gallon in CA and many people changed their usage.  A lot of people also got rid of their SUV’s and trucks and bought smaller, more efficient cars.  Now, people have adjusted their lifestyle and still need gas for their cars so overall the US isn’t really using much less gas.
