Does an automatic car consume more gas than a manual transmission one?

Traditionally, manual transmissions offer better fuel economy, but technological improvements in recent years have allowed the automatic transmission to deliver performances nearly as efficient as a manual. A manual couples the transmission to the engine with a rigid cluth while an automatic uses a torque converter, which is less efficient. So, brand new automatics use just a little more gas than vehicles with manual transmissions, but older manuals get much better gas mileage than automatics.
