Studies in Graphic Design do not generally entail package design. However, the Art Institute does offer an Instructional Design emphasis at some of its locations. Package design does fall into this category, but their program information does not specify whether or not their mission involves designing greener packaging. In some cases, creativity and innovation takes precedence (depending on the prospective client’s wants and needs); however, it is likely that conservation does play a role in the design of many packages, because there is definitely a demand for it. Companies like Ikea have their own designers who specifically design merchandise and packaging for the sake of compact shipping from factory to store, which in turn not only saves materials, but also keeps consumer costs low.
