The true identity of the Montauk Monster is unknown, but there are several speculations as to what it could have been. Many scientists speculate that the monster was actually a dog or raccoon, whose carcass had possibly decomposed slightly by the time it washed ashore. Another possibility is that it was a type of water rat found in Australia. There is even the theory that the carcass was a fake, and was a product of someone using latex to create the appearance of the monster.
