No! There are plenty of machine-washable wool garments. Right now, for example, I am wearing Smartwoold socks, which can be washed in a washing machine. Smartwool also sells sweaters that are machine washable.
Though technically wool should always be dry cleaned, there are ways around this. Stores like Wal-Mart or Sears, etc, will typically sell at home wool cleaning kits. There are also ways to clean wool without these specific kits. Unless it is a stain, most things can be cleaned from wool using a fabric brush. When hand cleaning wool, use a mild detergent and room-temperature water….never hot. More advice can be found at the below site.
