Fresh Kills landfill opened in Staten Island for Manhattan’s trash in 1947 but closed in March 2001, after years as a “temporary” landfill. After September 11, it was opened for a brief time to absorb debris from the Twin Towers but was reclosed again. It only took residential waste but that amounted to 13,000 tons per day or four million tons per year.
