Does algae in oceans and lakes absorb a lot of carbon?

It all depends on how much algae is present. The good thing about algae is once it absorbs the carbon, it can be burned to produce energy. Hope this helps!

All life forms are also carbon based, so some of the carbon in the ocean will get incorporated into their structure.  Since algae take in carbon dioxide through respiration, they will use this carbon dioxide as the carbon they incorporate into their proteins, and energy storage.
