Since 1991, the United States has been the world’s second largest producer of gold, after South Africa. In the U.S., Nevada is the top-producing state. Alaska does have 12 major placer mines and several smaller ones. In 2000, Alaska produced 17,200 kilograms of gold. Since then, there has been a decrease in the state’s gold output.
