There are some regions of Africa that have significant geothermal energy resources. Developing these resources could produce huge economic benefits for the countries in question, as it would be a major development project that would benefit the local area – unlike mining and oil drilling, which in many cases have simply extracted wealth from African nations and shipped it overseas to markets in North America, Europe, and Asia. Certain East African countries like Kenya appear to have especially good potential for geothermal power development, and Kenya and some nearby countries are already beginning to move forward on developing these resources for electricity. However, civil strife and ethnic conflicts in some African nations present a challenge; it will be hard to get a major project like this underway in areas where civil war and violence is still a big problem.
