Good question, musehickman. Acidic solutions do cause the formation of rust to speed up. Rust only needs iron, moisture, and water to take place, but it can be sped up by electrolytes. Common electrolytes include solutions of acids, bases, or salts. It is probably most commonly known that the salt used on roads in the winter will cause cars to rust more quickly, but acidic solutions will do the same thing.
Hope this helps!
