Does the acid in car batteries get recycled like the batteries themselves?

Car battery acid can be reused or disposed of through the addition of a neutralizing agent, which breaks the acid down to water and a salt compound. The recycling company will then test the water for cleanliness and simply release it into the public sewer system. The acid is not recycled in the same manner as is the lead and plastic battery, which incidentally has a very high recycling rate — approximately 97%!
