Do zoos give animals enough room in their cages? Is there someone who inspects zoos to make sure they do?

The Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) has an accreditation process where zoos are inspected every 5 years and judged on everything from exhibit space and design to diets to enrichment to worker pay and turnover. It is a very comprehensive inspection that ensures all accredited zoos meet established standards that translate into proper animal care. The primary goal of the AZA for the last couple of decades has been to ensure that animals are being well cared for and that they are living in engaging and appropriate exhibits.
