Do zoo enclosures cause stress or illness in the animals?

Unfortunately, yes.  Though zookeepers do as much as they can to make the animals feel at home, some of them still don’t.  Perhaps the most well known example of this is in Killer Whales, where we observe their dorsal fins collapse.  Also, the life expectancy of Killer Whales in captivity is drastically reduced.

Although this is a negative case, there are plenty of animals that do well, if not better in captivity.  This is due to a great diet and medicine.
