A transition to some source of vehicular fuel other than non-renewables is necessary if we are to continue to use such forms of transportation. Most electricity in the US is generated by burning coal or natural gas, or via nuclear power, so switching to electric cars does virtually nothing in terms of reducing use of non-renewables, and would require mining much much more coal to quickly scale up electricity generation. Also, it would increase the demand for imported things required by electric vehicles, including neodymium and lanthanum from China, and lithium from Chile, among many other imports.
