They already have. Toyota was the number one car company in the world until its image was tarnished recently by problems with its cars. The company is currently under investigation by Japanese authorities because of reports of faulty brakes on the Prius. Due to these reports, Toyota has recalled 437,000 new Priuses and other hybrid cars. Toyota has also recalled eight million of its non-hybrid cars because of problems with unintended acceleration.
Despite the bad publicity Prius sales are up again after only a brief drop. Investigators have found that the reported brake problems may have been caused by the cars’ drivers, not the brakes. As for non-hybrid cars, the U.S. Transportation Department has fined Toyota $16.4 million for failing to report the problems sooner.
