President Obama plans to open new drilling on Alaska’s national petroleum reserve. This plan will work towards assessing petroleum exploration in some parts of the Atlantic and extend the leases of oil companies whose work in the Gulf of Mexico and Artic Ocean was interrupted by BP’s catrosphic oil spill last year.
There is new drilling in Alaska all the time – 5 rotary rigs operating in May 2011 onshore and one offshore. A year earlier there were 10, but there are new drilling operations in Alaska essentially continuously. Source: World Oil, July 2011.
