I am for stem cell research because it provides huge potential for finding treatments and cures for a vast array of diseases that humans are suffering and dying from everyday. These diseases include cancers diabetes, spinal cord injuries, Alzheimers, MS, Huntingtons, Parkinsons etc. The main arguement with embryonic stem cell research is that it requires the destruction of blastocysts formed from laboratory-fertilized human eggs. People who are pro-life feel that this action is unacceptabel and immoral and that these eggs are being robbed of their opportunity to experience human life. I personally feel that if the eggs were fertilized for research in the first place, and the findings from these studies could potentially help millions of sick people, then it’s ok. Right now, laboratories are only allowed to conduct stem cell research on those eggs that have already been destroyed or discarded by couples.

I do support stem cell research because it can be conducted on non-embryonic stem cells. There is no reason why we should not be using umbilical cord stem cells for research because umbilical cord stem cells can be harvested without offending anti-abortion people. By using umbilical cord stem cells, we can save lots of lives without harming any. Embryonic stem cells are a different can of worms.
