In a meeting in 2008 of the International Maritime Organization, the Marine Environment Protection Committee addressed the issue of greenhouse gas emissions from the commercial shipping industry, which was not originally covered in the Kyoto Protocol. Studies found that shipping accounted for 3.3 percent of the world’s emissions, and that number was growing due to increased international trade. A measure was implemented to motivate new energy-efficient designs, and to establish guidelines for fuel efficiency.
