Whichever comes out first will have a great deal of advantage when it comes to selling to impulse buys and other advertising promises. However, it could hurt the companies in the long run, particularly if they don’t get all the kinks out of the system first. So really, whichever product comes out first with a well built machine will have the advantage, so long as it works consistently.

From what has been said about the Chevy Volt, GM seems to have abandoned that stream of thought, whereas the Nissan Leaf is scheduled to be available for sale in December 2010.
There are also various differences between the two cars, the biggest being that the Nissan Leaf is an all electric vehicle, whereas the Chevy Volt is merely a hybrid.
