Not until we have several million of them on the road. Electric car drivers know that they should charge their cars at night because that is when the demand for energy is the lowest. Electric cars may even have a positive impact on the grid if some people charge their cars at night to store energy, then sell it back to the grid during peak demand hours on the days that they are not driving. Electric cars have to potential to allow us to shift to more renewable, intermittent sources of electricity like wind power. Wind is strongest at night, and unfortunately that’s just not when we are using most of our electricity. Since we currently have little to no storage capacity for this energy, it simply goes to waste. With more electric car batteries available for soring energy, we can take full advantage of intermittent renewable sources of energy.
