Until North Korea and South Korea sign an official peace treaty, the DMZ will not be taken down. And to be honest, I don’t see a peace treaty coming any time soon. The two sides have such high tensions, and North Korea even has tunnels under the DMZ in case they want to invade the South. There is also a large speaker pole posted on the northern side that spits propaganda to the south every once in a while. While it is sad, the good news is that the DMZ has become sort of a wildlife refuge and is aiding in protecting endangered species in the area.
