Cells could not survive without diffusion. If there was no diffusion, cells could become either hypertonic or hypotonic. If the passive transport of molecules out of the cell was not possible it would explode. If the transport was not allowed in the cell, it would shrink and then die.
Cells do have active transport systems which bring in or shuttle out things like potassium, sodium and calcium. Cells can also endocytose or exocytose items in and out of their cells so they may be able to survive. However, for everything to work properly, they require passive diffusion of many nutrients in and wastes out of the cell. Additionally, the active transport systems could not likely replace the passive diffusion because this requires a lot of energy, (ATP) much more than the cell would normally use.
