The oil spill definitely put legislation to take action already. Obama in fact propesed a ban on half of offshore drilling in the Gulf. Though it was blocked by a federal judge, I expect that legislation will slowly look to protect our oceans.
Yes, there is more talk about increasing safety on drilling rigs, and proposing legislation to ‘ban’ some oil development, ultimately this sort of disaster is inevitable as long as we are mining and harvesting the earth in this way. There is no 100% guarantee that there will not be another disaster like this until we end the necessity for drilling in this way. The ocean is a fragile wilderness and humanity is playing a far too detrimental role in it’s health and future well-being.
